NJSA The Exposition: What to Expect + What to Pack
If you’re headed to NJSA’s The Exposition this year, get ready for one of the most exciting junior swine events in the country. Whether this is your family’s first trip or your tenth, The Exposition is more than just a hog show. It’s a full week of competition, learning, friendships, late nights in the barns and unforgettable memories.
For first-time exhibitors especially, one of the biggest questions is:
“What do we actually need to bring? What do we need to do?”
We’ve all been there. Packing for livestock shows can feel overwhelming, especially for a multi-day event. Between caring for your pigs, preparing for the ring, and surviving changing weather, there’s a lot to think about. Add in preparing to stay for the entire week, and it can feel like a lot very quickly.
That’s why we put together a FREE National Show Packing Checklist. It’s available to download on our website and is designed to help make getting ready for Expo a little less stressful.
What Is NJSA The Exposition Like?
The Exposition brings together junior exhibitors from across the country to compete, learn and connect with other swine families. Expect long days, early mornings and barns full of activity from sunrise to late at night.
You’ll see:
The atmosphere is competitive but also incredibly supportive. For many exhibitors, this is one of the highlights of the summer show season. One of my favorite parts is watching the kids make friendships with exhibitors from all over the country.
Be Ready for the Weather
One thing families quickly learn about Expo in Iowa: you need to prepare for everything.
It can be cool in the mornings, rainy during the day, or hot and humid by the afternoon. Some days stay cool and rainy, while others can turn hot fast. Comfort matters when you’re spending long hours at the barn, so packing layers is always a smart idea.
Camping & Golf Carts: The Best Way to Experience Expo
If you ask experienced Expo families for their best advice, many will tell you the same thing: camp if you can and reserve a golf cart early.
Camping during Expo turns the week into a full experience. Families spend time together outside the barns, kids hang out with friends after the show day ends, and there’s a real sense of community throughout the campgrounds. Some of the best memories happen after the classes are over.
And when it comes to getting around the grounds, a golf cart can be a game changer.
Between the barns, wash racks, show rings, vendors and camping areas, there’s a lot of walking during the week. A golf cart makes hauling supplies, getting tired kids around and making quick trips much easier — especially during busy show days.
A few quick tips:
Even if you don’t camp, spending time around the campground is part of what makes Expo feel special. It’s one of the easiest ways for kids and families to build friendships that last long after the week is over.
Final Thoughts
Expo is busy, exciting, exhausting and completely worth it. Preparation makes the experience smoother and a lot less stressful — especially for first-time families.
Pack early, double check your supplies and enjoy the experience. The memories made in the barn and show ring are the ones that stick for years to come.
We’ll see you ringside!
